Raeana Roberson posted this image of her New York juror information card on her Facebook page
CNN reporter Haimy Assefa posted this article earlier this week here and it definitely made me raise a brow. Educator Raeana Roberts was offened when she encounted the word "Negro" as a choice of race on her Juror information card; she was offended to say the least and took to Facebook to rant (as I would have as well!)

How is it possible that in 2014, the word Negro is still able to legally be used to classify ones race?
According to a 2010 blog post by then director of the U.S. Census Bureau, Robert Groves, the word "Negro" was used in the 2000 census as a result of research in the late 1990s that showed approximately 56,000 people wrote in the word "Negro" under the "some other race" category.

More than half of these individuals were under the age of 45 in 2000.

Following the negative feedback, the Census Bureau conducted research on race and Hispanic origin using what it called the Alternative Questionnaire Experiment, according to the press release. The study found that removing the term "Negro" does not have an impact on data quality and therefore recommended removing the term for future data collection.

The Census Bureau, which follows the Office of Management and Budget for definitions of race and ethnicity, discontinued use of the word "Negro" at the beginning of 2014, according to a press release.

Would you have taken offense if you saw a  derogatory term used to describe any race of people on government documents? We want to hear from you. Tweet us @TheBLKSocialite

According to a post on www.NYpost.com a school in Far Rockaway, Queens in New York is lost and forgotten. This report disgusted me to say the least. Children are the furture right? So why are the leaders of tommorrow receiving less than less than attention and eductional support?

According to the report PS 106 is allocated $2.9 million to serve a low-income population with 98 percent of its students eligible for free lunches. As a Title 1 school, it gets extra federal funds, but community members say they’ve never seen a budget tracking the income and spending.

The article was ridden with horrible personal accounts from parents and community member. These struck me the worse:
  • Marcella Sills who is the principal over at PS106 gets a $128,207 salary, and also pockets overtime pay — $2,900 for 83 hours in 2011, records show.
  • About 40 kindergartners have no room in the three-story brick building. They sit all day in dilapidated trailers that reek of “animal urine,” a parent said; rats and squirrels noisily scamper in the walls and ceiling.
  • The school nurse has no office equipped with a sink, refrigerator or cot.
  • Students at PS 106 in Far Rockaway, Queens, have gotten no math or reading and writing books for the rigorous Common Core curriculum

that's not even the half....

Having friends that are educators, and once aspiring to be an educator myself, this story is nothing but a cry for help. Why should the students, parents and related parties suffer at the hands of an unorganized and unethical leadership.
